Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
