British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
