Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
